Does anyone else adore the color gray?  I find myself using it more and more on cakes and in my home life - it plays so well with all the colors.

Like on this cake - black and avocado green really pop when paired with it.

The biggest challenge on this cake was getting the edible sand to adhere to the sand castle topper and still look realistic.  In this case it kept darkening down too much.  But I fiddled with it enough that it finally turned out fairly well.

And, since it was the 1st birthday, there was a smash cake to match.

Yep...that's a graduation cake.  And, yep, it's August - when kids go BACK to school.  I'm a little bit behind (cough, posting May pics still, cough).  Or maybe it's just that I was very busy in May and have lots of cakes to share.  Yep, that's it.  Lots of cakes.

Also, back to school is happening, so why not start planning for graduation now?

It's been a little bit since I posted last - vacation took precedence!  But, to make up for it a bit, I've got three cakes for you today!

These cakes were all part of the same order - the airplane was the centerpiece with the other two flanking it.  Yes, the airplane is edible (except the wings and tail).  And, yes, I nearly had a breakdown building it - if you've been keeping up for long, you know I'm not a lover of 3D cakes...but occasionally I will undertake one.

I always have the best time creating cakes for my niece.  She embraces the different, quirky, "out of the mold" ideas - this year's birthday cake for her husband was no exception.

Yes...that is an elephant passed out due to a sugar coma.  Yes, he is holding a gavel.  Yes, that's a cup of spilled tea and law books.  All perfect fitting references to him.

Those of you have been following along for any length of time know I don't enjoy figure sculpting - but this was, I must admit, fun to create!

Lions, tigers, and bears! Oh my!

If you're thinking to yourself, "the icing on those looks a bit different from the usual," you would be correct.  It's whipped cream icing - not my favorite for much of anything and I only agree to use it in very specific conditions, such as this (i.e. cupcakes that can be easily refrigerated!).

I had fun with this cake...something a bit out of the ordinary.  Plus I love King's books; this book, when I first read it as a teen, left me a bit uneasy.  Clowns have never been the same.

Laissez Bon Temps Rouler

Yes, I know that Mardi Gras was a few weeks ago.

And Easter is on April Fool's Day this year.  Hopefully some of you will have some fun with the collision of the two.  After all, no matter the time of year, let the good times roll!

I attempted making a King cake for the first time this year; I took the lazy man's route and didn't bother to braid it like a traditional King cake.  And, there was no naked baby inside to pose as a choking hazard, but all in all I thought it was pretty tasty.  (My coworkers did too!)

February turned out to be a fairly busy month.  Which is strange because usually everyone is still trying to recover from the holidays and the New Year.

Oh January

January...when we all try to recover from the holidays and set unrealistic goals for ourselves.  I, myself, have already let 2 of my "resolutions" go for the year.  But, I made it a few weeks with them!

Not too many goodies for January...exactly 2 actually.  Hmm, maybe there's a correlation there between those cakes and my resolutions?

For instance, I'm too young to have too many resolutions for the new year.  Yep, that sounds like a good excuse.

Neither Snow Nor Rain

Neither snow nor rain nor frigidly cold temps could keep me from attending the 1st birthday party of my first great niece.  Because, I am after all, a GREAT aunt. *wink wink*

Her party was book themed with all the food, drinks, and, of course, cakes being book inspired.  Yes, I said cakes; four to be exact.

Chevron: Yay! Nay?

I think I may have mentioned it before, but I can't wait for the chevron trend to die.  I have a love/massive dislike (hate is such a strong word) relationship with the pattern.  I love the way it looks, but hate applying it to cakes.  Sooo many angles! But, maybe I just need more practice?

Christmas in July

Yep, it's Christmas!  If you consider my sharing July cake and cookie pics with you a gift.  And, hopefully you do.  Or at least, I hope they bring some joy to your day.

I love it when clients tell me to design whatever I'd like; this time around it was pineapples and glitter and bright spackled paint.  Pineapples are seen as a sign of hospitality and friendship, did you know?

I had the privilege of making a unicorn cake this past month - yep, I took part in the trend.  And, I may have the opportunity to make another in July!

December = Done

And, I'm back again today with December goodies.  Which means, I have finally managed to get all the 2016 goodies edited and posted.  Let's take a moment to appreciate this happening and to hope I don't get this far behind ever again.

December is for Christmas goodies.  These were my first attempt at petit fours.  They were a pain.  I'm not sure I ever want to make them again.
